This motion of driving photography thing has been an interesting exercise. It’s probably all drek, but fun drek. There is an element of the ‘happy accident’ as I can’t pay too much attention as I shoot. Yet there is pre-drive planning and set-up, general composition, decisions on speed, awareness of what I want, calculation and forethought. While a number of the shots aren’t keepers for various reasons (often the inability to change settings to deal with variations in lighting in a safe and sane manner on winding back roads,) a surprising number are. Surprising too is how close many of the keepers come to the idea in my head just before I click. I really like the break from my usual and in a way it reminds me of moving away from acrylic paint to water color – the former being all fiddle (for me) and the latter needing a looser hand.

I like the controlled spontaneity of the exercise. I had thought to get someone to drive me around, but I think for the time being, I am not willing to have that kind of full participation in the process. I would be able to do too much – change focus, level composition, yada, yada, yada
